WALKING ON BURNED PATHS

Aden, Abdoulaye, Ibrahima and Oumar, four youngsters from Conakry, four ilegal migrants crossing the Spanish-French border.

Those four men don’t know it, but they aren’t the first ones using these paths to cross the border clandestinely. British pilots, smugglers, those who were fleeing Francoism, and Portuguese migrants have walked these paths before themselves. They are repeatedly burned paths, corners that are very well guarded by the police at different times; but which have been repeatedly recovered to cross the border. It is necessary to give time to the burning path, to let it fall into oblivion… Suddenly it will blossom and it will be possible for someone to use it to cross the border. Until it gets burned again.

SHELTER FOR A NIGHT

By Gari Garaialde

Five young black men came down from the bus, some talking on the phone, some other looking around, as if they didn’t know where they are. It’s twenty past ten at night, it’s a cold and rainy night. A white woman approacehs, they don’t know each other, but she tell them “bonne soir”.

This is a scene that has been repeated every night since the end of October 2018. Sometimes, on the bus no one arrives who does not know where he is, sometimes no one arrives, but every night someone is waiting for them, willing to say ‘bonne soir’ to those who need it.

FEELING HOMELAND BY THE MEANS OF FOOTBALL

By Gari Garaialde

Many people have put all their senses at the Luzhniki football stadium in Moscow. But even before the final match, this football championship has taken the attention of the world. But it has also served to make homeland abroad; For many (now) Basque citizens who came from different countries it has been an excuse to join people who came from their same country and to enjoy it together: to applaud, celebrate, comfort each other …

TRADITIONAL WAY PIG SLAUGHTERING

By Gari Garaialde

Although nowadays almost all slaughtering is made in professional abattoirs, yet there are many farms that the killing is done in a traditional way.

Pig slaughter is a popular tradition existing in various European countries, widespread since ancient times and made by hand, with different peculiarities depending on the place in which it is held. It is performed once a year, traditionally takes place in the autumn and early winter, as the cold is required as a natural method of preserving the relatively large quantities of meat during the butchering.

By Gari Garaialde

Korrika (‘Running’ in Basque) is a symbolic biannual race where participants run across the Basque Country to promote their language and encourage people to speak it, and to collect funds for Basque language teaching centres for adults. As they run, participants carry a baton which they pass from hand to hand, kilometre upon kilometre, without interruption.

Its 20th edition took place in 2017, from March 30 to April 9. Over 11 days and 10 nights, the Korrika, went on for over 230 hours and passed through many Basque villages and cities, covering a distance of around 2200 kilometres, not stopping for a moment and with the participation of hundreds of thousands of people of all ages and conditions.
