Basque rural sports is the term used for a variety of sport competitions rooted in the Basque people traditional lifestyles. All of them have their origin in the two main historical occupations among its population, the farmers and fishers from the rural background. Many of those activities have managed to evolve into popular sports, some of which have become extremely famous.

Dragging games, a collective term for a number of sports in which humans and animals are involved in dragging heavyweights, divided into four different categories where oxen waging is the most popular version, though the last years men competitions have gotten more popular. 

8 people teams attempt to drag a heavy weight, usually a large rock, across a certain distance.

On May 11th, 2013, the first competition of women stone dragging was held at Aia, a small town in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country. It was the first contest ever held of this kind and it was called ‘Bizi Iturri’ (Source of life in Basque language), with the participation of teams from Orio, Ibarra and Ergobia, 3 towns of Gipuzkoa.

Each participating team was formed by 8 women who would drag a 500-kg stone through a 25 meters long square. The goal is to accomplish as many rounds as possible within a15 minutes period.
