White Costumes. Traditional Carnival in Arantza (Navarre)

Carnival fesivitien in Arantza (Basque Country) are held 2 weeks before official carnival dates. That thursday is time for ‘Mozoro Zuriak’ (White Masks in Basque language) who dress in flannel shirts, blue pants and colorfull scarfs on their neck, with paper tapes made by school children hanging in the sfarfs. They visit several farms, accompanied by some accordionists and tambourine players, singing and dancing in different cottages and eating and drinking what tehy get as payment for their animated songs.

There was a time, when loggers did not work in winter-time, these festivities were more celebrated than the summer-time patron saint festivals.
